This procedure has transformed Cosmetic Dentistry. While we have been bonding pure porcelain crowns for 20 years, today's new all-ceramics are so strong they can be cemented with traditional cements. This means the cementation appointment is less stressful on the patient, and much quicker. And, the resulting restoration is much stronger, and less likely to develop staining at the margins of the crown, due to bacterial microleakage that sometimes occurs around bonded crowns.
I selected this case to show how well these new crowns mask very darkly stained roots. The silver metal at the edge of the preparation is a post that was place following a root canal. The whitish material near the gums is a technique we learned that involves placing an opaque resin in a "trench" near the gumline to keep a dark root from showing through the gums as a dark line below the crown.
While it is very difficult to match one tooth to one right beside it - especially in the front of the mouth - I think this case turned out pretty well. In addition to selecting a shade the lab can work with, we take digital pictures of the surrounding teeth, and email them to our lab. This way they can be looking at a great reproduction of your teeth while they build the porcelain to match.
